What to Fix on Your Site Before You Write a Comparison Page
Comparison pages cannot force AI citations. Learn what structure can and cannot change, and which site facts to fix first.
Comparison content does not have its own AEO ranking factor, and there is no published formula that turns a table into an AI citation. What you can change before you write is whether the comparison is extractable and trustworthy. What you cannot change is whether Google or another answer engine chooses to cite it.
Brand promotion: this article introduces Guangsuan's global GEO service for official-site facts and citation checks. It is not an independent review.
What a comparison page can change
A comparison page can make one clean statement easy to lift without guessing. That happens when two options are measured on the same dimension, in the same unit, under the same condition, with a stated verdict. When those four pieces are present, a reader and a retrieval system can reuse one row without inventing missing context.
That is a structural advantage, not a ranking score. It is simply easier to read and easier to reuse than a page where the deciding numbers are scattered across prose. The practical effect is bounded: a clean comparison is easier to use, and being used is not yours to command.
What it cannot change
Google states its position explicitly for Search: there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary. No special markup file, content chunking, or ideal length creates eligibility.
A structure can be perfectly extractable and still never be selected, because the answer engine decides what to surface, and that decision changes per query, language, market and model. Google also states that just because a page meets all requirements does not mean Google will crawl, index or serve it. Indexing and serving are not guaranteed.
There is also no AEO score you can raise by adding a table, and no way to buy a citation. The measurable things are mundane: is the table readable on a phone, does each number have a basis, is the date current, and does the page say who is making the comparison.
Fix these on your site first
Before you draft rows, settle the official facts the rows will depend on. If your own site disagrees with itself, the comparison will inherit the disagreement.
- Identity and entry point. Confirm company name, brand name, abbreviations, and which domain is official. Keep the same spelling across About, Contact, and product pages so the brand is not split into two subjects.
- Scope that can be compared. List which products or plans can realistically substitute for each other. Two things only belong in the same comparison if a buyer could realistically substitute one for the other. Do not place a bare component next to a turnkey system.
- Units and conditions. For each planned row, write the unit first and the test or operating point next to the number. One unit per row. If you cannot state the condition from a dated source, leave the row out.
- Source and date. Record where each third-party fact came from and when it was read. If the numbers cannot be published with a source, do not put them in a public table.
- Verdict rule. Decide in advance that the verdict will name who each option suits, rather than crowning a universal winner. A comparison whose only job is to make one option win reads as advertising, not reference.
- Technical reachability. Make sure the pages you will cite or link are crawlable, indexable, and visible as text in HTML. A blocked page, login wall, or noindex on the source page stops reuse before structure matters.
A worked example (teaching data only)
The table below is invented to show the shape. It does not describe any real product.
| Dimension | Option A | Option B | Basis / condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Included users | 25 named users | 40 named users | Standard plan, same date |
| Support response | 8 business hours | 4 business hours | Standard tier, business hours |
| Data export | CSV, daily | CSV, hourly | Default settings |
| Best for | Teams with stable headcount | Teams with seasonal peaks | Editorial judgment from rows above |
Note how each row answers "under what condition" before it gives a number, and how the last row is a judgment rather than a value. Because the verdict names a condition instead of declaring one option universally better, the table stays true for readers with different priorities.
What to leave out
- Numbers without conditions or dates.
- Different scopes placed in one table, even if both publish a number.
- An empty cell relabeled as not supported. If the competitor page does not state it, mark it as not verified on the date checked.
- Confidential data presented as public. If it cannot be published with a source, omit it.
Where Guangsuan fits
If the facts themselves are inconsistent across your site, fix the source layer before you publish comparisons. Checklist before you publish
- Does each row compare the same property, in the same unit, under the same condition?
- Can a reader lift one line and still be correct?
- Is every number traceable to a dated source or labeled as a teaching example?
- Are unknowns marked as not verified rather than as unsupported?
- Does the page state who made the comparison and when it was updated?
- Have you avoided implying that the table earns citations?
Frequently asked questions
Will a clean table get cited? No guarantee is possible. A clean table improves extractability; selection remains with the platform and varies by question, language, and mode.
Should we add special markup for AI? No. Follow the platform guidance above. Keep structured data consistent with visible text; do not treat markup as a citation switch.
What if a competitor fact is missing? Record it as not verified with the check date. Do not turn absence of public information into a failure claim.
